TREASURES OF SOUTH KYOTO

Nothing beats the Early Bird Tour when it comes to getting great photos and especially those of the Fushimi Inari shrine. And taking in the top two sights before most people finish breakfast is very satisfying too. We get to have the places to ourselves and get a lot more done in a short amount of time too. I hope that you really enjoyed this tour. Here is a little recap of the places we went. Note that depending on the pace of your tour and the interests of the group you are with that day, there may be slight variations but either way this can serve as a little memory for you of the day you had with Kyoto Fun Tours.

RECAP OF OUR TOUR ROUTE & HIGHLIGHTS

We started out at the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine which is one of the most visited places in Japan. Notable for the statues of foxes, the messengers of the gods, flanking the entrance. We first went to see the main shrine buildings and showed you how to make a shinto prayer and taught you a little about the customs of shintoism. Then we made our way to the real highlight, the amazing "sen-bon dori" with it's over one thousand gates resembling a red tunnel. We chatted about Shinto beliefs as well as some stories about the founding of the shrine. This is a truly magical place. We got some great photos along the way and then made our way back to where we met that morning to grab a taxi to the next stop.

We then made our way to the amazing Kiyomizu Temple. A place rich in heritage and with spectacular views of the temple complex itself as well as the city below. We could take in the place in a relative calm, making it hard to believe we were at the most famous temple in Japan. Then a chance to look out at the city below from the famous "Kiyomizu platform" where surprisingly people used to take a "leap of faith" seeing if the gods favored them or not. We could also look at the treasured deity of the temple the "Kannon" goddess of mercy.

After that we took a stroll down the stairs passing the famous falls where you can drink for longevity, love and success in school then continued through the beautiful grounds until we reached the slope filled with many shops slowly starting to open. We then visited the areas of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka in the Higashiyama district before concluding our tour next to the imposing Yasaka Pagoda. This is one of the most iconic structures in Kyoto and the current structure was built in 1440, but it is believed that there has been several versions with the oldest dating back to the 6th century! We covered a lot of ground and got to the most popular sightseeing places in Japan right before they got crowded. We hope you enjoyed your day with Kyoto Fun!

Dive into our recommendations below and let us guide you to Kyoto’s hidden gems that celebrate authentic flavours.

Enoteca Irodori

Their specialty is deep friend skewers of vegetables and meats dipped into a rich and tangy brown sauce. They even have deep fried cheese cake! Very good value and tasty. Just 1 min walk from where the tour begins.

MAP

Udon MAIN

One of the tastiest udon places I know with a very creative menu and cool atmosphere.

Kyoya Kiyomizu Shimbashi 京家きよみず 祇をん新橋

Another obanzai favourite with tasty tempura, sashimi, salads and more.

Toku: Wagyu Yakiniku

A yaki-niku BBQ place with great views out the window to the Kamo River. You can even book a private booth for groups of four or more. Choose from several cuts of beef from all over Japan and enjoy grilling them at your table. Fun and casual way to enjoy delicious "wagyu"

Gion Duck Noodles: Ramen

One of the fancier ramen restaurants I have ever been to, this place has a French influence and uses duck as the base for the broth among other ingredients. Also highly recommended by the Ramen Beast, a friend of Kyoto Fun.

Kyoasobi: Yakitori

A new favourite of mine right in the heart of Gion. Lots of delicious chicken options, but you can also get wagyu beef, tons of vegetable options and a decent drink list too. A great option for groups as we can all order our favourite thing.

Gion Sho: Obanzai

This is obanzai style meaning small dishes of meat, fish and vegetables all served on small shareable plates. It has a pleasant and cosy atmosphere with the opportunity to book the private room on the 2nd floor too.

Gion Danran: Casual Teppanyaki

This is a tiny little restaurant tucked away on a quiet little street but it's a real gem. The married couple make it a friendly atmosphere and the food is incredibly good. Simple dishes but very flavourful.

THANKS AGAIN !!! WE HOPE YOU ENJOYED ...
